Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly — I’ve been known to write on this blog about biryani, one of my favorite dishes to eat and one I am still learning to make! (If you have a great recipe for it, please share!).
This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.
Today is February 8, and the weather where I am (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) is gray, cloudy, and damp. But the first daffodils are up and in bloom, in my garden and around the city, their yellow faces like bright little suns against a still-brown winter landscape. I will be heading out soon to go to a writers’ workshop; it’s a group of about 10 people, meeting in a member’s smallish living room, so I’ll wear a fragrance that won’t overwhelm or distract. I think I’ll go with Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’ Smudge Nebula, which I have in both room spray and oil rollerball. From the DSH Perfumes website:
Crossing space and many miles, an idea was co-created that would speak to both worlds: the dry dust of the Southwest US and the lush humidity of Japan with the purpose of combining the spiritual and aesthetic atmosphere of both to make a specialized ‘energy clearing’ spritz and oil essence.
Dawn calls it an “Eau de Protection”, to be used for “for clearing rooms, blessing spaces, gems, and people with one journey through the mist.” (She means clearing rooms in the sense of clearing the rooms’ energy, not overpowering others with one’s perfume!). So bless this space, and the writers’ workshop, and all of you! What are you wearing this weekend?
Shalimar ode a l Vanille sur la route Mexique, which wins a prize for one of the longest perfume names. I was not initially a lover of Shalimar but then I tried this, which was a gateway back to the original. I was originally looking for the Madagascar version but found this for a decent price. I tend to forget I have it though – because – too much perfume. I definitely need a better system to ensure I don’t “lose” bottles in my closet.

That one is supposed to be very beautiful, from what I’ve read. Yes, I need a much better perfume system myself. I’ve been trying to enter them into a database as a start.

So nice that yoi host the Chatroom… I just had a big bowl of pho before we go to a birthday party later in the evening. SOTD is Ambre de Merveilles, because it’s still cold here in Germany.

Thanks for dropping in! I have a tester of Ambre des Merveilles but haven’t really paid much attention to it yet. I liked it a lot when I tried it in a store.

Today I wore First Kiss, by Be Layered.
My dream is to find a perfume app that I can enter my perfume stash into and have it organize and help me pick a perfume for the day. Like, “today I want a vanilla-patchouli scent”, and it brings up all my perfumes with those notes. Or even a random pick, if I can’t choose, lol.

Have you tried Perfumist? I don’t know much about it, but Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays has mentioned it on Facebook.

No, but I’ll check it out!

My scent of Saturday was The Spa😉 I spent all day luxuriating in hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, relaxation beds, pool. Ended the spa day smelling of Elemis Frangipani Monoi oil, which was used for massage. They do a whole range of fabulous smelling goodies, most of which I own.

I’ve laughed at the “clearing the room” different meanings! Definitely love the “good”, airy and peaceful kind of room-clearing scents… In fact, I’ve been eyeing Bvlgari’s “Eau Perfumée au Thé” line, and trying to pick a favourite… any suggestions?
For the “bad” type of room-clearing fragrance… the last one I’ve tried was Mugler Womanity (interesting, but I’m not a fan of it at all, I’m afraid…). Mugler fragrances are full of character, but sooo intense! It’s impressive!

I like Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert, but Thé Bleu is also very good; they are both airy and peaceful. Thé Noir is awesome but not airy, it’s very smoky. I haven’t tried Thé Blanc or Thé Rouge yet.

Thank you for the suggestions! I seem to be mildly anosmic to Thé Vert, but it’s been a while since I’ve tested it and feel like trying again (I did like the little I could smell…). I’ll surely try Thé Bleu when I’ve got the chance, the notes do seem lovely! (I’m scared of the tobacco note in Noir, though… I do like smoky notes, but not tobacco!).
Thé Rouge I’ve only tested briefly, but kind of liked it (from the nozzle, it reminded me of English Breakfast tea, which I love!). Must try it properly, though. Thé Blanc is quite lovely, a musky and dewy “white” scent with a hint of fresh green.

I forgot that I do have a question
Has anyone tried the LE Jo Malone’s focusing on lavender? I believe there are three.

I haven’t yet, but if I make the effort, I can probably find them at a nearby department store. There are 3 or 4 in my city that carry JM.

I am particularly interested in the Wisteria and Lavender. They are the 2020 spring releases limited editions. The other two are Birch & Lavender and Coriander & Lavender ( which is a re- release from the 2016 LE collection). I will be curious to hear your thoughts if you sniff them. A bit surprised they didn’t add the Amber & Lavender to this collection.

Yes, I would have liked that to be included. Wisteria and Lavender does sound beautiful; there is an amazing wisteria vine at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London that is truly fragrant, and if they’ve captured that scent, it will be lovely.

Hi, so good to find your blog, I’m afraid it hasn’t registered properly with me before for some reason. I wonder about the same LE with wisteria and lavender as Brigitte mention here

Went to a football team families’ potluck dinner last night; one of the team moms said she misses seeing everyone since the season ended, so she suggested it and hosted. It was so much fun! The boys ate vast quantities of food, and we adults had modest amounts of wine, beer, and also food. My SOTE was my beloved Chanel No. 22 EDT. Every time I wear it, I’m reminded of just how beautiful it is.
Today I’m kicking off Monday with the start of a head cold, so I’m using one of my MANY unused sick days to stay home. Usually I power through most ailments and go to work, but I’m trying to 1) model better virus control to colleagues and students; and 2) take better care of myself. So far, the cold hasn’t affected (much) my sense of smell!

Oh no!! I hope you feel better soon!! Glad you are practicing self care. I am trying to do the same. No 22 EDT is gorgeous. I have a decant of 90s version and I love it.

It’s extremely sensible on your part! I keep fighting with a couple of co-workers who insist on heroically coming to the office while being sick for absolutely no good reason since not only they have unlimited PTO, but also they could work from home, if they needed to.
I hope you’ll get better soon!

Pour Un Gimme was my autocorrect on the phone when I posted Pour Un Gimme on the APJ SOTD. After that everyone started calling it Pour Un Gimme.
I started commenting on APJ as Marzipan but another commenter chimed in that it was their name. However, folks still call us Mr and Mrs Marzipan!

Ha ha! And it did it here as well!! Changed homme to gimme!!! It’s actually Caron Pour Un Homme.

For me it will always be Pour un Gimme. Autocorrect is mine and Brigitte’s nemesis. And sometimes it wins.

Yesterday was a rough workday so I continued with the lavender for its calming effect. Pour Un Gimme. Today my parents are coming for a visit and I will wear it again. If my mom or dad like it I will make decants for them.

Sorry about the rough workday! My favorite lavender is currently Jicky EDT, though I’m also enjoying the bargain purchase of Nirvana French Grey I picked up at TJ Maxx recently.
