Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.
Today is Friday, November 13 — as if we in the USA needed another Friday the Thirteenth right now! In honor of the day, I am trying my sample of Editions Frederic Malle’s Superstitious, and I quite like it. The opening phase has an intriguing combination of aldehydes and incense which I’m enjoying. Maybe it will bring good luck today.
I don’t know that I’m naturally “superstitious”, but I do use phrases like “fingers crossed” and sometimes I remember to say “rabbit rabbit” first thing on the first day of a new month, lol! Do you have any superstitions about Friday the 13th, or any “lucky” fragrances?

Happy Friday the 13th – I always thought the expression was “white rabbits!” I’m wearing a sample of Ramón Monegal’s Hand in Hand today. It’s billed as a “rose oud” but smells more like raspberry and smoky leather to me. Quite pleasant.

I like several of his fragrances! I was able to try most of them a few years ago on a trip to Barcelona, and my husband gave me Lovely Day around the same time, which I really enjoy. Very interesting combination of rose and licorice/anise with blackcurrant.

I don’t think I’m superstitious but like you I frequently utter phrases such as ‘fingers crossed’, ‘please God’, ‘with a bit of luck’ and ‘touch wood’. I think a lot of US folk have been uttering them for a while now, to good effect😉
I’ve got FM Superstitious and I love its retro aldehydic feel. It’s also one that garners some positive comments so it obviously works well on me.

Right there with you on the fingers crossed, and I haven’t uncrossed them yet! I live in Georgia so we are gearing up for another battle here. Think blue thoughts! I enjoyed wearing Superstitious yesterday morning, then I switched to No. 5 EDT for the NST community project. It’s more my style anyway. I used a spritz from my late mother’s last (vintage) bottle, and I can still smell the base notes on my wrists this morning. So lovely.

Today I’m wearing a combo of Teint de Neige and Insolence, and it’s really very nice.

Ooh, that does sound beautiful! And I love the name “Teint de Neige” so much. I must pull out my Insolence, it has been a long time since I wore it. Thanks for the reminder!

Hey there OH,
Yes, I am a bundle of ridiculous superstitions from always closing the toilet seat and lid so the luck won’t run out of the house to not wearing holes clothes so my luck won’t run out. I wear tigers eye at all times to ward off bad juju and after i clean the house I burn incense to capture negative energy. Also, I chat to a multitude of gods from all different religions.
This is only scratching the surface.
Perfume wise I am in a couple of swipes of old-isa No 5 per the NST weekly wear.

So now I have an image in my head of you, Portia, doing all of those things at the same time! Which is quite a vision, btw, and it makes me smile.

HA! I bet it’s a vision. Of a frazzled fat old guy freaking out at EVERYTHING!
No matter, even while performing said tasks etc I do know that I’m being a bit ridiculous but these habits keeps the wheels turning. I’m ruled by minutiae, which means there’s nothing BIG to worry about. A win really.

What a wonderful vision you have painted. I can imagine you wafting round the house with incence sticks or sage bundles.

So nice to see you. Thanks.

Hi Portia. I’m as well as can be expected during our 2nd lockdown. I’ve done most of my own shopping, mainly to get out of the house for a bit. I really miss seeing my family properly. We keep in contact every day via a group chat.Sometimes facetime. My sister has been in hospital for about 5 weeks and we can’t visit her. This has been very upsetting ffor her and us. I make sure I’ve been wearing perfume every day !!!! XXXX

I’m sorry to read about your sister in hospital, Matty, that’s scary.

Yes it is scary, especially as she was admitted to hospital with something unrelated to Covid and caught it in hospital. !!!!!

Hope your sister gets back you and the family soon. What a horrid situation for everyone. But as always, you are wafting beautifully.

Thank you Cassie. It’s very upsetting for her and us. People keep dying on the ward she’s in.

Dear Portia,
I wouldn’t have pegged you as superstitious, but now when you described it, it seems so fitting and cute! 🙂

Yeah, I wouldn’t think of myself as superstitious until the question is asked and then suddenly I am awash.

Aww, what an adorable black kitten in the featured image!
A scent named Superstitious sounds just perfect for Friday 13th… and the composition seems interesting! I love both aldehydes and incense notes, I wish they both were more “in vogue” in current perfumery.

It’s very beautiful, though the drydown is more soapy than I had expected. I’ve realized I really do love aldehydes after learning more about them. “My” Chanel has always been No. 22, which is an aldehyde tsunami, lol.

I am not very superstitious and I love black cats. But sometimes I do a incense cleaning of the house, mostly because it smells nice

What a great idea! One of my daughters uses incense in her room, I’ll have to ask her to cleanse the house with it.

I’m not superstitious. The only day-to-day thing I can think of is “knocking on wood” not to jinx something, but it’s more like a ritual/tradition than an actual belief. “Keeping fingers crossed” for me is a speech figure, similar to “bless you” in response to someone’s sneezing.
The last week was strange: I was busier than usual, with several morning meetings head to toe, so once or maybe twice I skipped wearing perfume altogether 😦 I’ll catch up this week!
