Perfume Chat Room, June 4

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, June 4, and I had a facial yesterday for the first time in years. I rarely get facials anyway, and of course getting one seemed unthinkable for the last 15 months. But we have a wedding to attend — in person! — this weekend, and my skin was looking dreary, so off I went. What an improvement! No miracles here, just nicely exfoliated skin with lots of healthy oil massaged into it, including my neck and arms. All the products smelled wonderful, too.

I mostly use unscented skin products, so as not to interfere with whatever fragrance I’m wearing, and also because unscented products are supposed to be healthier for daily use. I’m quite partial to products from The Ordinary company, though I don’t use them as regularly as I should. I am religious about wearing sunscreen every day, though. Do you have any favorite skincare products, scented or not?

  1. Enjoy the wedding! I haven’t had a facial in ages, although I use a ton of skincare. I like the Drunk Elephant babyfacial as an AHA/BHA treatment (pricey though, and I hear the Ordinary one works well for much less). I use the Maelove Glowmaker vitamin C serum every day. Just started using the DRMTOLOGY needle less serum (peptides) but don’t know the full results yet. I also use essences/hydrating mists a lot to try to keep my skin hydrated. And of course sunscreen, which I would use even if I didn’t use anything else! My skin isn’t terribly sensitive so I experiment a lot.

  2. I loved First Aid Beauty’s BarriAIR moisturizer, which was magical as it would foam up in the jar and it was a nice, light texture. I was very sad to find recently that it’s no longer available anywhere. Back to square one in the search!
    Enjoy the wedding!

  3. Facials are wonderful, aren’t they? I love the steaminess of it all… I love skin care products and ones that smell good, too. My favorite skin care brand is Sisley Paris. Their Black Rose products smell divine and they work wonders for my skin, too. I can’t afford their other products, but I love the black rose creams and masks. I also discovered another French brand this year, Yon-Ka. They have similar products to Sisley, but not as expensive. I use Yon-Ka serums and moisturizers and Yon-Ka hand cream. Many of their products have an orange blossom scent that is very pleasant. I also use Dr. Perricone neck cream, but it’s not scented.

Enjoy the wedding!! I haven’t been to a wedding since my son’s wedding 3 years ago. That’s a long time. What fragrance are you going to wear?

  4. Have a lovely tim e at the wedding OH. Is it your first since shut down?
I understand how many people love getting facials but I’m not one of them. Nor do I use much face or body product apart from bubble bath, soap, water and shaving balm.
A while back though I bought a Rose Oil Facial Serum from Aftelier. It is such a strong scent that I rarely reach for it because it interferes with my fragrance choice but every now and again before bed I will give myself a faceful. It’s unbelievable the overnight change in the texture of my skin. I’m blessed with pretty good skin anyway BUT this gives me clear, glossy, plump skin.

  5. I hope you have a blast! It’s such a treat to see people 🙂

I don’t remember when I had a facial the last time: at some point I decided not to spend money on that any more. Instead, I planned to start buying better skin products… and wasn’t doing it for years as well 🙂 This past year I finally got back into doing more skincare than just moisturizers and sunscreens (those I used religiously for the last 15+ years). I will write more about skincare products I use in my Sunday Self-care series, but want to mention now that I do not mind perfume in my skincare (but only if I like the scent) and that now I’m being very careful with what I use because I’m using a retinoid cream at night, which I’m getting used to, and I’m still experimenting with sunscreens trying to figure out which ones cause my skin to react. But I have A LOT of different products that are waiting to be tested.

Today at Sephora I tried the most recent Atelier Cologne perfume – Lemon Island – and I hated it in development to the extent that I had to wash it off once I got home. I am really surprised. Until now there was just one AC perfume that I actively disliked – the vanilla one. And now this… I hope it was a fluke and not the beginning of the end with the brand being completely absorbed by the parent company.
