Perfume Chat Room, June 25

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, June 25, and we are enjoying unusually cool, dry weather. My husband and I are also indulging in a bit of second-career fantasy/brainstorming, revolving around the sudden appearance on the market of a beloved local nursery business. Maybe I’ll follow in the footsteps of Diane St. Clair, the very gifted founder and perfumer of St. Clair Scents, and combine farming with perfumery! I do love several of her fragrances, like Gardener’s Glove and First Cut. In fact, since I wore her Pandora yesterday for the “community project” at Now Smell This, I think I’ll wear First Cut today, since we were recently in New England and saw the “first cut” of hay.

What scent are you wearing today? Do you ever have second-career or side-hustle daydreams involving perfume?

  1. I dont think i will have a second carrier , because i am a radiation oncologist, but as a girl i fantasized about taking an apprenticeship as a hat maker. So maybe i will take some courses when i retire. Should be fun.
I am wearing vintage Amazone today from a decant. Its stronger than the actual version, but still fleeting, but Good.

  2. Hi! I’ve got yesterday’s test of Amouage Ciel still lingering on my hoodie sleeve… I tried out Raw Spirit’s Summer Rain this morning, but it’s gone now.
Thanks for tip to St. Clair Scents–I’m excited to find a new brand, and only a stone’s throw from where I grew up!

  3. Owning a nursery sounds right up your alley. But I will say that owning your own business is a HUGE amount of work, especially something like a nursery. I don’t have a second career. I’m happy with retirement. I do have my eBay sales, but I’m still selling all the things I bought that I don’t really need. LOL My fashion doll collection is the gift that keeps on giving. I keep thinking there is no more to sell and I keep finding things, which is good. Not complaining! My husband refers to the doll stuff as ‘acres of diamonds.’ Hardly, but people do buy it, so it’s all good.

I’m test driving Jivago 24K for women. It’s a retro type floral and I do like it very much. My little packet of samples for the Jivago Sniffapalooza zoom event next week just arrived and I had to try this one.

  4. Yesterday I wore No 19 EdT, and it was great. Love it every time I wear it.

I wish all that data science explosion happened 10-15 years earlier than it did: my education was in that area, so I could have gone into that field.

I also thought multiple times that I would love to be working with flowers (as in arranging, not growing 🙂 ). Not sure I was it as a career, but I still might take some courses if I have health and energy when I get time from my main job.

    • What a great activity — my late mother helped arrange flowers at our church for years. I would help occasionally, which is why I got the job of choosing flowers for her memorial service a few years ago. It was very comforting to sit down with the florist and talk about my mother’s preferences, and how to reflect her background in the language of flowers. Like floral therapy!

  5. Hey OH,
LOVE that you are thinking outside the current.
Hello from Sydney lockdown 3.0. We had a bus driver not wearing his mask when trafficking the quarantine people to and from the airport and hotels. He also bussed other people in the regular world and managed to spread his C19 Delta Variant far and wide. GRRR!
Side hustle? I’m not sure if I’d like to perfume side hustle. Definitely don’t want to be a perfumer. Maybe come in for an established company and do a couple of creative director one offs? Even that doesn’t really appeal. There has long been the dream of opening a perfume store but we are amply supplied here in Oz, considering our small population. It would be fun to work a perfume counter a couple of days a week after I retire from drag (though I can’t even imagine not doing it)

Wearing loads of stuff but a new thing I bought on a friends recommendation has been fun; and infinitely better than expected. Attar by Montale. Very reasonably priced on the discounters and smells warm and resinous with a soft animalic undertone for the whole day.

    Portia xx
