Perfume Chat Room, August 6

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, August 6, and I am SO READY for the weekend! Even though I had a short work week, I was in my office for three straight full workdays, and I had forgotten how tiring that is. I have to conserve some energy, as our oldest daughter is moving back out this weekend, after having lived at home for the past year because of COVID. She started a great new job earlier this week, and she will be sharing a small rented house with two friends. It’s very exciting! Our second daughter moved out last month, to share an apartment with her bestie from high school. So our chickadees are re-launching! We’re very proud of their perseverance during the past year of challenges.

And now that their belongings will be out of our house, we will finally repaint the several rooms that were damaged and had to be replastered after last fall’s plumbing disaster, including their bedrooms. That is supposed to start next week, and I’m really pleased with the paint colors I’ve chosen. About half will be the same, and half will be variations on the original colors. We’re splurging on doing the living room in a gorgeous dark red from Farrow & Ball, and I’m finally changing our dining room walls from a light taupe to a more greenish neutral, to go better with the William Morris rug in that room. I will rearrange the art we had on the walls in those rooms, and hang more art in the bedrooms, since I have several pieces from my late mother’s house that I hadn’t yet hung. Our youngest (the only boy) will finally get to move into the largest kids’ bedroom, which makes him very happy.

Speaking of happiness, today’s Community Project over at “Now Smell This” is to wear a fragrance that evokes happiness, however you choose to interpret that. I’m wearing Blyss, from Perfumology, the independent perfumery in Philadelphia, PA. It comes in parfum strength, and Perfumology has a discovery set that includes Blyss and three other fragrances commissioned by owner Nir Guy. The set is currently sold out; I hope it gets re-stocked soon!

  2. We are in Boston this weekend for a wedding. So my Favorite Friday perfume will be Chanel Paris-Deauville, which was my most worn last summer – I have been “saving” it for a special occasion this summer. Best wishes to your girls for “re-launching” and for all of the changes to your house. We have a painter lined up to repaint our two story entry/staircase this winter (neither of us is willing to get up on tall ladders) and I’m happy it will finally be a color I chose.

  3. Lots of excitement for you! Minions was one ride I wanted to go on that I didn’t get to at Universal Studios, so I watched a bunch of video clips and remembered just how silly (lovable) they are. I haven’t tried anything from Perfumology. Wearing my sample of Parle Moi de Parfum Tomboy Neroli today, which feels very “solar” to me, and I’m happy to see the sun again after a couple of depressing, rainy days. Have a great weekend!

  4. This reminds me that I have wanted to get Blyss for some time. You’re right, it is very joyous perfume! As to your paint, I have a couple of bedrooms upstairs, one with a nice neutral green and the other wallpapered in a red and green toile. Let me tell you, they sure look good when Christmas season arrives! Enjoy all the changes happening in your life.

  5. Good to hear your kids are happy and out of the house. I am debating to get some walls painted too. Thinking muted turquoise to match my sofa. SOTD is Batucada, which is a very happy scent. But I am having a nice white wine instead of Caipirinha

  6. So much excitement at your house! The red color sounds amazing! I love darker paint colors. They are so dramatic. Our master bedroom is in a medium teal color and I really enjoy it, very relaxing. My happiest perfume is Heeley’s Iris de Nuit, my signature. It never fails to make me smile. I was wearing another happy one before I read your post, Hermes’s Pamplemousse Rose, a fresh tart grapefruit with rose. Perfect for a humid summer day. It’s totally unisex, not girly at all.

    We’re doing a bit of remodeling also, finally getting rid of the old tank water heater that took up half of our kitchen pantry. Now we have a tankless water heater that doesn’t need to ‘warm up’ and it’s outside so I never have to worry about that giant water heater tank leaking and destroying my floors. Now that I have a whole nice pantry space it’s time to hire someone to tear out the old shelves and make it into a really nice, functional space. We also need to update our electrical system. We’ve made some improvements, but it hasn’t had a major overhaul since the house was built in 1960, so it’s time. It’s always something with a house, isn’t it?

I wouldn’t have had the courage to paint a room dark red, but the living room was that color when we bought the house (the couple who owned it were an artist and a graphics editor), and we loved it! So we’ve kept it that color. It was an old Sherwin Williams color whose name I can’t remember, but I fell in love with Farrow & Ball “Rectory Red”, which has more pigments than the usual interior paint. The sample patches I put on the walls look amazing!
    Tankless water heaters are great, we have one. Yes, it is always something with houses! Ours was built in 1905, so you can imagine. When we bought it, the air conditioning was piped to the second floor by a huge outside duct that went up the side of the house into the attic and then down into vents in the rooms! Don’t even get me started on electrical systems. We’ve now updated all of it in all parts of our house; we did it in stages over 20+ years. Your pantry project sounds great, I love a nice pantry!

    Sorry for my late reply.
    I bloody missed the NST Friday CP again. I do try but it’s an awkward time here in Sydney.
    OOOHHH! Love the sound of your painting colours.
    Congratulations on emptying the nest again. Your boy must be BUSTING to get into the bigger room.
    Happy scents? Most of them really. I was going to wear good old Shalimar on Friday because it holds so many happy memories and still makes me smile when I wear it. BUM.
    Still locked down here, no end in sight. Starting to feel the lack of income now and am finding the government help site incredibly daunting to try and navigate. Jin’s still working so we are doing fine but not having any spendable money of my own is irritating. Yeah, I also know that I’;m in a far better situation than so many, just having a grumble.
