Perfume Chat Room, June 6

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is June 6 and I’m a day late posting this. I’ve never seen a week like this.

I live in the United States, in a large city. As the whole world knows, and while it watches, and some march in sympathy, my country has been roiled by protests nightly since last Friday, following the death of a Minneapolis man named George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer kneeling on his neck for 9 minutes, which was captured on video. He wasn’t accused of anything dangerous, he was suspected of possibly passing a fake $20 bill. Twenty dollars.

This is not the place for a discussion of these tragic events; I created this blog and named it “Serenity Now” five years ago, when I was going through a very difficult time myself, and I was trying to keep in mind the many blessings I’m privileged to enjoy. But I know you who read this will understand that I don’t feel I can let this week pass without acknowledging and empathizing with the pain I see in my country and city. I pray that we emerge as a better version of ourselves, calling upon the “better angels of our nature”, as my favorite President once said.

Today my SOTD is Histoires de Parfums 1969, which seems appropriate. I hope you all have had a peaceful, safe, healthy, and fragrant week. Thanks for being here.

  1. I enjoying reading about the benefits of aromatherapy. Our sense of smell is linked to the feeling part of our brains and science shows that aromas powerfully affect our emotional well-being. The past few months especially, I’ve appreciated fragrances (perfumes and essential oils) which feel nurturing and healing to the soul.
I’ve had a very fragrant week; Young Living Peace and Calming essential oil in my diffuser at bedtime, Brigitte’s oil blends on my body at bedtime, perfume sampling, and wearing favorite perfumes. Working from home allows me to spritz lavishly!
Have a safe, peaceful, and fragrant week!

  2. Hi OH,
Yes, I hear you. Acknowledgement is important.
Perfume wise it’s been a bit of a hodge podge lately. Our weather has been all over the place and so have my moods.
This morning I went for Arabie boy Serge Lutens and evening Curious by Britney. Could not get more opposite ends of the spectrum but they are both currently handy and feel right.
It’s chilly so having finished my online trivia for the night, checked in with a bunch of mates and sorted a hot cup of coffee I’m off for a long soak in the bubble bath. BLISS!
    Portia xx

  3. In addition to everything that’s going on, I got a bad news from our old friends this week. I’m trying “not to move” and just see what else this year has in store for us.

I was wearing Lyric, Arbole Arbole and other perfumes I love (nobody knows how long anyone has to enjoy what they have) and tested one more time Floraiku samples before posting about them. I wanted to participate in NST’s community project, but was too busy and too down this week to even check my DB for perfumes with osmanthus note: since it’s not one of my favorites, I don’t know without looking it up.
