Perfume Chat Room, July 31

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, July 31, and the tough month of July is over at midnight. For me, July wasn’t too tough. I’m lucky to still have a job, though I’ve just had to take a pay cut; my family is still healthy; we spent a week at a lovely beach within driving distance of our home; my vegetable garden is flourishing. But the statistics on illness and deaths in this country continue to distress. That’s all I’ll say about that here.

A bright spot: I really haven’t been in the mood to buy fragrances much in recent months, and I’m trying to do better at using up and trying the samples and travel sprays I already have, instead of spending more money. But Beautyhabit had the discount code I posted last weekend, so I went for it and got something that I had hoped to buy in Paris this summer, on the 30th anniversary trip we had to cancel: Les Parfums de Rosine’s Muguet de Rosine. I’m so delighted to have it! I also got Patricia de Nicolai’s Week-end in Normandy, which also has a strong lily of the valley note, and I’m excited about that too, given that I had also hoped to visit one of those boutiques in Paris.

Have you made any shutdown fragrance purchases?

  1. I just bought a used bottle of Nuit Etoilée, but it’s too hot for it to wear now. I think I will put on something refreshing later. Now going out to test drive a Brompton bike in the heat

  2. Sorry to hear about the pay cut. I’m glad you found some perfumes to treat yourself. I’ve bought some sample kits, most recently from Les Parfums de Rosine – I’m in a similar boat as you as I was slated to go to France later in August. Also just blind bought a vintage bottle of Silences by Jacomo as it seems highly recommended and I’m curious about the comparisons to Chanel No 19.

  3. Hi there OH and crew,
Pay cut is a bummer. We are living with reduced household income too. Belt tightening in progress.
We also aren’t going to Paris this year. Tres BUMMER!

I have done a little shopping for myself and a bunch for the vault.
From a friends Sale Doc on FB I grabbed CHANEL Sycamore EdT, Caravelle Epicee by Frapin. Noel au Balcon by ELdO and Saffran Troublant by L’Artisan. Such deep discounts I couldn’t pass them by.
My BFF wears a few frags and I saw CKOne Gold Edition and Tommy Girl by Hilfiger on super sale. Having learned my lesson on not stocking up on Queen by Queen Latifah I’m now safe for a few years of Birthday and Xmas.
Lastly I have been panic buying a couple of brands that have gone tits up or been DCd.

Now that it looks like Australia is getting C19 in earnest I won’t be going back to work anytime soon and my frag shopping has gone to zero. It’s not like I’m going to runout, like EVER!

    • I have been so fortunate in having been able to take many lovely trips in the last 10 years or so; I’m taking weird comfort in having FB “memories” pop up periodically with photos of those travels. And as I said to my family in July, we are so lucky to live within driving distance of places that other people fly on planes to visit! And our own city (Atlanta) is very appealing too. Also, my employer is adding one paid leave day a month to workers who took a pay cut (not everyone — employees whose salaries are below a certain level did not have their pay cut, which I appreciate and think is right). So it’s not cash flow, but it will be paid time off, and that’s a rare and precious commodity for many Americans.
Your fragrance purchases sound wonderful! And yes, it does seem as if you won’t run out ever, lol! Good for you. Which brands have prompted panic buying? I binged on Jean Patou Heritage fragrances over the last year and I’m so glad I did, because LVMH has finally made it official that no Patou fragrances are in production any more. It’s on their website. Bastards. The Heritage collection had already been discontinued but they are still pretty easy to find online. Any Joy aficionados better stock up now, though. I can’t believe they have killed off that legendary perfume in favor of their “Dior Joy.” It seems so short-sighted, too — why not make Patou’s Joy the pillar of an entire series, as Guerlain has been able to do with Shalimar?

      • How fantastic are FB Memories? I bloody love them and it’s the first thing I look at each morning. What better way to start a day than see the crew living it large?
YAY for your boss giving you an extra days leave and giving the ones who earn best a pay cut. That is incredibly socialist of him. If only the world ran like that.
I bet LVMH stops production for a while then gives the top flight sellers a 21st century reformulation and does exactly that. Hit the flankers hard. I have a bottle of Chaldee and quite a bit of vintage Joy and 1000 in various concentrations. It would be a damn shame if we lost them forever.
