Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.
Today is Friday, January 19, and baby, it’s cold outside! Earlier this week, our nighttime temperatures dropped as low as 13 degrees Fahrenheit, which is very unusual in our area (USA Zone 8a, for you gardeners out there). Yesterday saw temperatures up as high as 50 degrees, but another cold front is moving in and we’ll be back down in the teens tonight. Thankfully, I’ve now done as much as possible to protect my garden and plants in pots, which I got done before the last cold snap, so let’s hope we get less damage than last year, when a hard freeze killed or damaged several plants.
Thank you all for last week’s suggestions as to fragrances for this time of year and climate! I’ve added another note that works for me right now: carnation. It is floral but also spicy, so it feels warm to me. Today’s SOTD will be Caron’s Bellodgia, a classic, in its cologne version. I also have an audiology appointment, so I don’t want to wear anything too overwhelming, out of consideration for the staff!
Do you have any favorite carnation-focused fragrances?
We got another dose of fresh snow last night. It’s cold, but normal winter cold for us (25 degrees this morning). I think today’s perfume will be Tocade. The NST theme is Dolly Parton’s birthday, and the somewhat absurd bottle of Tocade seems to fit. It’s a happy perfume, rose and vanilla – and I’m not really one for rose perfumes, but this one makes me smile.

I couldn’t think of a good Dolly Parton option but someone else on NST mentioned Lyric, which is perfect! So I’ll probably copy that and switch to Lyric later.

I like Balenciaga Paris and L’Artisan’s Oiellet Sauvage, both with nice carnation notes.
It’s cold here as well, below freezing, -3 centigrade, for a few nights and into the weekend. I love the cold weather, so refreshing!

I think I’d like the cold more if it came with snow! Alas, no.

We’ve has frozen soil & for a week. Nothing appears to have died.
Opium is my carnation of choice but I’m excited to try Hiram Green’s latest release, Philtre. A carnation centric composition.

If carnation is similar to clove in perfumes then it’s not for me, but I wanted to say that’s a beautiful bouquet in the photo! I have a similar one right now and it certainly cheers the place up on these cold, icy days.

I don’t think that carnation and clove are the same. I mean, they might be present together in perfume, but carnation while spicy is still a flower while clove is a spice. At least that’s how I feel.

Vitriol d’Oeillet! Yes, I like it too.

Serge Lutens “pissed-off carnation” is my favorite as well. And I’m still going through the decant of it that I bought many years ago. It’s too sheer for a cold weather, in my opinion – not that we have anything even close to horrors you described :).
Another interesting (and winter appropriate) carnation perfume is Euphorisme d’Opium by DSH Perfumes. But it was a part of limited collection many years ago, and I’m not sure it’s still in production.
Stay warm! (Both you and your garden)

We had -6°C for several nights during the week, that left us on Friday evening then the dreaded rain and storm blew in. Storm Isha is currently howling, we live on high ground and are sitting in candlelight just now. I don’t mind, as long as there’s no damage to life or limb. I’m no help with carnation suggestions as I don’t really have anything with that note as a main player. I’m reading answers with interest though, love the heady, spicy smell of a bunch of carnations. My mum grew them back in the day.
