Perfume Chat Room, August 21

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, August 21, and we’ve had daily thunderstorms all week. One bright side of that has been telling a non-fraghead friend of mine who expressed her love of the smell of rain that it is called “petrichor.” She was delighted! Have you had the experience of sharing a little tidbit of fragrance knowledge with a friend who found it intriguing?

I hope you’ve had a good week and are looking forward to a lovely weekend. Any special fragrances in mind?

      • It’s a very special chypre with lots of green and herbs. I also smell mushrooms, roast chestnuts and a very medicinal balsamic note, which reminds me of chestnut honey. The first time I tried it it was a scrubber. But I tested it some more times and now I am debating a bottle of it before reformulation strikes.

        • How interesting! For me it stayed a scrubber no matter how hard I tried (and I did, since I couldn’t believe it was lived so much by others). In the end I had to give away my decant because even the idea of trying it again scared me. But maybe it is a skin/perfume interaction, and on you it might smell amazing.

  1. I’ve been wearing some of the Vilhelm Parfumerie samples I have. So far my favorite is “Room Service, a blackberry and mandarin scent with violet and musk. It’s fresh and lovely. Another favorite is “Morning Chess,” a green scent with bergamot and a soft leather note.
Regarding your question, I explain perfume notes and terms often to my husband, who is very interested in the subject, but he has limited smelling capability after 2 massive sinus surgeries that damaged some of his olfactory glands. His favorite smell is freshly ground coffee beans and he also loves and wears Terre d’Hermes. He says it’s one fragrance he can smell and it suits him very well.

  2. I’m sure I did my share of sharing 🙂 with anyone who was willing to listen (or not), but nothing particular come to mind at the moment.

Last Sunday morning, after the freak dry thunderstorm that lasted all night and brought us all those multiple fires, there was about 10 minutes of summer rain – something that almost never happens in our area. It was much earlier than I get up even for work – let alone a weekend day, but I woke up, opened a balcony door in the bedroom, and we were enjoying the rain and its smell.

I have a plan for a very special perfume this week: I got a back-up bottle of Ta’if EdP from the OJ site (they were having a good sale in the UK (but not the US) a couple of weeks ago, and I managed to get a bottle from there (and the price was still better even with the DHL delivery). So, today I plan to wear it to my friend’s birthday from the new bottle to confirm that it hasn’t changed much in the last 10 years. I still have some older travel sprays of EdP, a body oil and half the bottle of extrait, but I wanted to make sure I won’t run out of this my No 2 perfume love any time soon.

  3. Hiya OH,
The weather has been sunny but cool here. It’s been gorgeous.
Wearing a slew of winter warmers that I’ve pretty much neglected all season. Amouage Ubar and Gold Man, Lutens Le Participe Passé and Guerlain Bois Mysterieux have all been brought to the desk and are getting wear.
