Perfume Chat Room, February 18

Welcome back to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, February 18, and I am the happy recipient of a full bottle of Maison Lancome’s Peut-Etre, a Valentine’s “gift” from my lovely husband. I put “gift” in quotation marks because, like many of us, I chose and ordered the fragrance so HE could give it to ME. He is a patient, lovely man! He also surprised me with a beautiful orchid plant; I made him a fancy dinner that included filet mignon and an excellent bottle of red wine. This may be the first Valentine’s Day we’ve had alone together since becoming parents. In 2020, we still had one child living at home; and in 2021, we had all three children living at home due to the pandemic!

Today, though, I’m wearing Maison Christian Dior’s Jasmin des Anges, from a decant that came in my monthly scent subscription. It’s really pretty! I’m a bit cautious around white flower scents, but this one is light and lovely. It has notes of peach, apricot, and osmanthus with the jasmine, which keep it fresh and airy. It reminds me a bit of a light white wine, even prosecco, but more floral.

The name of the fragrance reminded me that there is a lovely tropical jasmine called “Angel Wings jasmine”, or Jasminum nitidum, which then reminded me of this wonderful art project called the Global Angel Wings Project, by Colette Miller. She started it in Los Angeles, the “City of Angels”, with a street mural of painted angel wings, where passers-by could pose in front as if they themselves had sprouted wings. She has now painted angel wings all around the globe.

How do you react to jasmine fragrances? Do you have any favorites?

  1. Jasmine is perhaps not my favorite of the white flowers. Have not tried the Dior. I’m wearing a sample, Mizensir L’Envers du Paradis for the NST project. It’s mostly ambroxan so a no for me. If it doesn’t wear off, I’ll try to scrub it so I can wear Ormonde Woman again later!

As for Valentine’s Day – we didn’t even manage cards this year. Last weekend was the football senior banquet and then family over for the Super Bowl so we made a collective decision to ignore it!

  2. I am not too much into white flowers, but i really love Salome with its dirty Jasmin and i also liked AC Jasmin Angelique a lot. Today i was wearing a sample of Orangers en fleurs, which not only smells of orange blossom, but tuberose and jasmine too. It was really not bad at all for a white flower fragrance. My boyfriend does not like perfume and it often causes him sneezing and asthma, so i am now mostly taking my bottles with me to work and spray it there. He would never get me perfume, even if i would tell him what to buy, so i think you are lucky!

  3. Love jasmine – and I can cope with the more indolic aspects too. The filthiest I’ve come across is Lush Lust, not for the faint of heart but so close to the jasmines I’ve smelled in the wild in hotter European countries.

  4. I love jasmine as long as it’s not too indolic. My favorite jasmine is Eau d’Italie’s Fior Fiore. It’s very fresh smelling and just divine, in my opinion. I also like D.S. & Durga’s Jazmin Yucatan very much and may eventually purchase a bottle. Please let us know how you like Peut-etre when you have worn it a few times!

  5. Hi there OH,
Sounds like you had a splendid V Day. We don’t really celebrate but this year we both bought gifts and took a couple of our single girlfriends out for dinner, gave them little gifts too. It was a very nice day/evening.
Dior’s Jasmin des Anges is really pretty. I have a decant here that is looking a bit empty. One of those pretty, wear without intruding beauties. I can imagine it being a solid go to.
Today I’m in Silences, inspired by Undina’s what do you wear for calming post.

  6. Your Valentine’s Day dinner sounds wonderful. We got some roses since hubby and I both love roses and had a nice dinner with some strawberry macarons for dessert. I found some gluten free ones that were delicious. I should try making my own macarons. They are just egg whites, almond flour and almond flavoring mostly, but somehow it seems daunting. I was inspired by the Pavlova your daughter made for Christmas. I love anything with egg whites. The most fabulous dessert I ever had was an Iles Flotant that I had in Paris. Divine!!

    • Yum, that sounds delicious! Macarons are hard; my daughter and I tried to make them years ago. They tasted wonderful but they were flat! That was before she really took her baking skills to the next level, so we might have better luck if we tried again. I think it was due to overmixing the batter. Rookie mistake!
