Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.
Today is Friday, January 29, and I am posting this before I start teaching my new course. So if you don’t hear back from me for a couple of hours, I’m not ignoring you, I’m just on Zoom.
I’m really enjoying a sample I’ve had for a while, Thierry Mugler’s Supra Floral, from the Les Exceptions line. I’ll admit, I haven’t been a big fan of Mugler fragrances. I don’t really care for Angel or Alien; I’m okay with Angel Muse, but I really only have it as a representative fragrance from that house; I was disappointed with Aura, which I thought might be the Mugler for me. It turns out that the Mugler for me may be Supra Floral! Thankfully, I do have other fragrances that scratch the itch for hyacinth and are easier (and cheaper) to get. But it’s nice to know there is at least one Mugler that I really do like a lot, since I know so many perfumistas are attached to Mugler fragrances.
What’s your SOTD? Or, do you have a favorite Mugler? A love/hate relationship with the brand?
Hope your new course is going well! I’m not all that familiar with Mugler perfumes, and Aura smelled like mint chewing gum to me, but I do like their bottle designs.

I’m wearing DSH/American Perfumer Colorado for my “Friday favorites”. I own Alien, Alien Fusion, Innocent, minis of Alien Sunessence and Eau Extraordinaire. Have tried Aura – meh. And the original Angel is absolutely disgusting on my skin. None of them rise to “favorite” status and if I had to cull my collection down, they would probably be voted off the island! I keep them around because I find them interesting and the bottles are appealing.😳

Colorado sounds so gorgeous whenever I read about it! I have to restrain myself from gong down those super-limited edition rabbit-holes, though. I’m still in the “have way too much fragrance because I’m still trying everything” stage of perfumista-hood! So until I cull my own collection … I did fall for DSH’s limited edition Heirloom Elixirs, which I’ve been able to buy in an annual set she issues at the end of the year. And I’ve taken part in a couple of 4160 Tuesdays’ crowd-funding projects, which has been lots of fun and very rewarding!

I absolutely love Supra Floral and have a few samples of it. I’d love a full bottle but it’s only available in 100 ml and so that is not an option. My bottles of Mugler are Angel Muse and Alien Fusion. Your pic is very striking, Mugler sure knows how to make a statement with their bottles. I especially love the Fusion bottle. My sotd is L’Air des Alpes Suisses by Tauer. As is usual with his fragrances it packs quite a punch.

Ooh, tell us more about L’Air des Alpes Suisse! That caught my eye when it launched.

Mugler has a special place in my heart because for a while I was obsessed with Angel (and it’s not even a figure of speech!. You didn’t have a reason to read my post from almost 10 years ago, but if you’re curious, just skim through the opening story part https://undina.com/2011/10/18/angel-of-jealousy/). So, I usually try Mugler’s perfumes but rarely wear any. Supra Floral and a couple more from that collection are exceptions: I bought small decants of them in a friendly split and wear them from time to time. What I especially like about Mugler’s creations: they don’t even pretend that any natural ingredients are involved 🙂 And their bottles are gorgeous!

I’m not a Mugler fan, but my SOTD is Auphorie’s L’Anima Della Rossa, a beautiful rose scent with added notes of narcissus, ambergris, oakmoss, honeysuckle, lilies, spices and woods. It’s a 33% extrait so a little goes a long way and it smells divine on me. At least I think so! It smells a lot like Zoologist Bee on my skin so I know a number of people might not like it, but I definitely do. I layered it with Jo Malone’s Mimosa and Cardamom, which lightened it up some. The two actually meshed well, which surprised me.

I admit Mugler’s fragrance style clashes with my taste, so I struggle with their offerings. I admire the chocolate note in Angel from afar, but absolutely don’t (unders)tand Alien nor Womanity… Aura, Angel Muse and others I haven’t tried, as they’re not widely avaliable where I live, and whenever I’m in a dept. store big enough to carry them, I end up preferring to sniff from other brands instead, oops (haha). I’m curious about Supra-floral now, though…
I agree with everyone about Mugler bottles – they do look really cool!

Tonight I have a sample of TF’s Rose Prick on my wrists, thanks to a lovely perfumista on NST. It’s very, very nice — I may have to get a larger decant in a monthly subscription I have.

Which subscription are you referring to? I’m going back and forth between buying a bottle and getting a decant from eBay.
I didn’t expect but I liked it a lot.

Royalty Scents has it, and several other Tom Fords. I had Scentbird for a long time and was quite happy with it, but I had exhausted most of the selection they had that interested me.

Do they have any referral program? If yes, you should invite me/send a code/whatever. Some of Tom Ford’s perfumes are priced nicely for 8 ml – if it’s actually $20 (or do they add something for “premium” brands?)

I’ll find out about referrals, thanks for the suggestion! All the scents are priced the same, so the Tom Fords and several others are a good buy.
