Perfume Chat Room, October 22

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, October 22, and the business of this month continues in our house! My husband had knee surgery this past Monday and is confined to the lower level of our house, which has a bedroom, full bathroom, and his home office (including his beloved large TV and a sofa from which to watch it). I’m mostly on leave this week, though with daily interruptions from my own workplace (ugh). I’ll be working from home again, as I did before August, as he can’t be left alone all day, uses a walker for now, and will need to be taken to daily physical therapy. But he is in great spirits, the pain is manageable, and he is very optimistic that he’ll regain a lot of function in that knee, which has been a problem for decades since a high school sports injury.

I’ve taken some advantage of our currently separate sleeping quarters to try out some more adventurous fragrances at night, after he has settled in for the night downstairs! I’m working my way through some samples, which is a welcome activity after busy days. He, on the other hand, is taking great comfort in using his habitual after shave every morning, and I must say that I too find it comforting. It adds some normalcy back into what is a novel situation for both of us. The power of scent!

What is happening in your lives, fragrance-related or otherwise? And speaking of knees, do you ever apply perfume behind them, as illustrated? (There aren’t many ways to link the topics of perfume and knees, but I’m trying, lol!).

  1. Good luck on the recovery – my husband had Achilles repair this summer so I’m familiar with the post surgery routines. Today’s favorite is Si Lolita – lots of pink pepper so not everyone’s cup of tea. Tonight is my son’s last football home game (exciting but a little sad too) and it will be about 50 degrees, finally true football weather for us. Feeling the photographer’s pressure to get the last few perfect images for our seniors at home. We have one more regular season game and then playoffs, but no word yet where those games will be played. (Our team is currently ranked 3rd in the state – lots of pressure on the kids but they are still having fun, thankfully!

    • Wow, 3rd in the state is huge! I’m glad they’re still having fun. I hear you about the last home game; my son’s was two years ago, and it is truly a bittersweet moment. Football was such an important part of his life for several years, and we enjoyed being along for the ride. I will say, though, I was relieved when he was done and hadn’t had any real injuries. No concussions, no torn ligaments or tendons, no broken bones.
I wish him and his team the best of luck in the home stretch and the playoffs! And I wish you much success in getting those last perfect images!

  2. In summer I sometimes apply perfume at my knees, if I want to overspray my more fleeting scents. I had a meniscus surgery some years ago and it took me a long time to heal. Hope your husband recovers fast. I wore Aromatics Elixir today,, something I have grown to love more with every wearing. I am starting to think of a backup of my BUB…

  3. Behind the knees, yes, in summertime. And in most other places as did Marilyn (just in case I should bump into a president some day😉). Best wishes for a good recovery to your hubby. He sounds like he’s going to be king of his own little castle for a while. It’s lucky that you have a ground floor bedroom suite. Makes life so much easier. I’ve been trying a few new decants (have to stop buying them, it’s ridiculous at this stage) one is an Ormonde Jayne I have been wanting to try for years but it not getting around to now.

  4. Wishing your husband a smooth recovery! I have never thought of applying perfume behind my knees, although I have been aware of the concept. I tend to wear perfume like an invisible Victorian-style ruffled collar, heavy around my upper body. Latest indulgence is a Kierin NYC discovery set which should be arriving any minute now.

  5. Wish the hubs good luck on the recovery from me OH. Good luck to you too having an invalid.
We are out of lockdown and I’m slowly getting back into the clubs. Having work and a direction is balm to my soul.
We have been entertaining almost every night on our verandah, having Korean BarBQ on the hibachi with loads of salads. It’s wonderful seeing everyone and we particularly like it being in our home so we can just do a quick clean up and fall onto the couch after they all go.
Spring is warm and wet this year, perfect!

  6. Speedy recovery to your husband! I always thought it was smart to have a bedroom on the ground floor of the house – exactly for that type of occasions. Unfortunately, our townhouse doesn’t allow for it, which means that we’ll eventually be looking to move.
I remember that one of the perfumista acquaintances told me that she would wear Fracas behind her knees. But I don’t think I’ve ever done that deliberately (neither I’ve ever worn Fracas 😉 ) – if not to count my all-over-the-body Bronze Goddess application while in Hawaii.
This week wasn’t good for my perfume “consumption”: I had a couple of dentist visits (one of them for Rusty) and a lot of work, so I missed completely some days and did light testing during the rest.

    • Poor you and Rusty! I don’t like dentist visits, although I have a great dentist with a great assistant. I only realized a few years ago that my reluctance is almost certainly related to the traumatic root canal work I had to have when I was about 8 (I broke my front teeth).

        • Oh no! I’m just grateful to have found a nearby practice that is very gentle. I had an issue with avoidance; it was an ordeal to make myself go for the regular cleanings and checkups, though I did. Now it’s not something I enjoy but it’s not something I dread, either.
