Welcome to the Friday Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.
Today is Friday, April 21, and my roses continue to explode in bloom (’tis the season here in the Southeast, I know some of you haven’t even gotten all your spring blossoms yet). I’ve been enjoying sniffing each one and smelling the subtle differences in their scents. Some are more fruity, some are more musky, some are so strongly “rosy” that it’s all I smell.

This past Monday, I posted another “Counterpoint“, the collaboration between me and Portia of Australian Perfume Junkies. The mystery perfume we analyzed is Jean Patou’s Joy — the original, the one and only Joy. If you haven’t read it yet, please check it out! I really love these projects.
In other news, the community project at another favorite blog, “Now Smell This“, is to wear a spring floral fragrance or other fragrance that reminds you of spring. I’m ready, bring it! I have so many spring florals, it’s not even funny. Now I just have to decide which of many to wear today. I think I’ll go with a newer acquisition, 4160 Tuesdays’ Both Sides of Clouds in extrait strength, the one that earned me compliments from a checkout cashier last week!
What is your favorite spring floral fragrance if you have one?
My favorite spring floral is Van Cleef & Arpels’ “California Reverie.” It’s the perfect orange blossom fragrance, not too sweet, not too musky, not too indolic, balanced by some soft citruses, Just right! I forget how beautiful it is over the fall and winter. Then when I break out the summer and spring perfumes and spray it on, California Reverie always elicits a sigh of joy and a “Wow, that’s gorgeous! from me.
On a side note, an article in The Atlantic today claims that enthusiasm for everyday life is the secret to lasting happiness. I think we all have that covered! I always feel enthusiastic about a lovely fragrance.

I have kept peeping at California Reverie but never pulled the trigger as I have many spring scents already

I have a number of perfumes that come out in spring, mostly. Goutal La Violette, Grand Amour, Eau de Charlotte, Aqua Allegoria Rosa Pop, Apres l’Ondee, Tendre Poison, anything Iris. Not sure what I’ll wear today – almost tempted to pull out my SJP Stash as it will be thunked with one or two more wears. I haven’t ever thunked a bottle – before I was into perfume, I had a few bottles that got old and weird smelling (stored on the dresser). This will be my first real thunk. Mostly due to it being my lucky perfume last fall! Most of my spring bulbs are done, just waiting for the next set of flowers.

Wow, a real thunk! I say go for it. You have a great spring fragrance list, too!

Hmm… Masque Milano L’Attesa (iris), Givenchy Rêve d’Escapade (rosy and white floral), Le Labo Ylang 49, Essential Parfums Rose Magnetic… I’d also include Parfum d’Empire Osmanthus Interdite but it seems osmanthus is a fall floral.

I have two osmanthus scents in my spring scents. That glorious apricot/suede is so beautiful in spring

I’ve started cracking out the spring scents just this week. Sisley Eau de Campagne, Floris Madonna of the Almonds, 4160Tuesdays Urara’s Tokyo Cafe (now Tokyo Spring Blossom), Aerin Lilac Path, Chanel Beige, Bottega Veneta & Diam Blond are now getting some love on warmer days. Cooler days are met with vintage Anais Anais

Those all sound beautiful, and some are unfamiliar to me, so please elaborate! I’ve tried Tokyo Spring Blossom, Lilac Path, and Beige (that was a while ago).

Eau de Campagne is a tomato leaf green that I love. Sisley’s original fragrance from 1974 & an early Ellena creation. The candle is superb.
Bottega Veneta is now d/ced as the house has decided to only do their Palladio $$$$ range. BV is a perfectly balanced apricot/osmanthus/suede yet the notes on Fragrantica don’t list apricot or osmanthus but citrus & jasmine.
Lutens Diam Blond is the apricot/osmanthus/suede taken to the nth degree. Sadly it was retired from the SL export range when they changed bottles & is now only available in the bell jars. I’m sure that one of the US sample sites will have it in stock.
If you enjoy suede scents BV or DB are a must. They smell like the best suede handbag linings

I’m pretty sure I have Daim Blond tucked away in the back of a cabinet, must look it out now based on your recommendation.

I have an immortelle scent that I’m enjoying a lot from Manos Gerakinis. It reminds me a lot of osmanthus fragrances with a similar apricoty, suedey vibe to it.

Immortelle is not my friend I’m afraid. No matter how is dressed up it still smells of sweet curried goat!

I almost choked on my coffee. Ha ha! Goat, huh? Thank goodness I don’t get any cabrito in my Immortelle.

Love BV and also have the Velours version. I know where there’s a bottle of BV for sale and I’m pondering on it as I’m getting low.

I also like Carner Barcelona’s Tardes and Puredistance Opardu for spring and summer, both light breezy florals. Although, Opardu can be cloying if you spray too much. It requires a very light spray on my skin.

I like Tardes too.

This week I had to go hunting in the packed away perfume boxes for Iris Rebelle. Thankfully it was in the second one. I just needed it! Had some sprays of others in the box while I was in there, it was very fragrant round here. I tried Both Sides if Clouds when it was released but I prefer Clouds Illusion, and have just purchased another bottle – the buying mania still hasn’t abated. I’m looking forward to Sarah’s new perfume which is just going into production.
