Perfume Chat Room, July 17

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, July 17. The pandemic continues to surge here in the USA, to the alarm and chagrin of most Americans. Not enough, apparently, as we saw too many of our fellow citizens strolling around the beach town we recently visited with few masks in sight. That doesn’t worry me too much outside, in a strong sea breeze and sunlight, but it is very concerning to see older people, who are at more risk, blithely dining indoors with no protection. We were glad to see that virtually all businesses had their staff wearing masks and most had polite signs at least requesting that customers wear “face coverings.” Our state is one of those that won’t allow local governments to mandate masks.

However, we still enjoyed our vacation by the sea, since we were able to avoid almost all people entirely and sit on the beach under our canopy almost all day and well into the evening. I’ve been wearing Amouage’s Beach Hut Woman regularly, and I like it a lot! Has anyone here tried it? How has your week gone? Any particular scents of the day we should discuss? Also, I’m delighted to say that this week marked my fifth anniversary using WordPress, which means that this blog is almost exactly five years old! Wow, how time has flown!

  1. Yay to 5 years, and also a vacation. My county has a mandatory mask order, it seems like most people in my community are following it indoors. I do agree that older people often seem the most resistant. I’m struggling a lot with mental health; the battle over schools opening is raging in our community and people are not being respectful of differing opinions. It’s hard to see people you thought were kind and decent become hard and intolerant, even when you know it’s driven by fear. In any case, today I’m wearing JD Mimosa Mixte from a complimentary sample sent by Jeffrey Dame – he sent an email a couple of weeks ago offering a free mini spray of his men’s collection – I chose Chocolate Man – and included the JD in the package. It’s a little bit like Penhaligons Ostara, maybe softer.

    • I’m so sorry you’re having a bad time. My daughter is supposed to start a co-teacher job in a few weeks, her first. We feel pretty good about the precautions being put in place but it’s an independent school with plenty of resources. I wish everyone could be kinder to each other, we are all under pressure in different ways. So glad you got a nice surprise from JD! You know I love JD Duality.

  2. I have worn JD Duality constantly this past week, my fave from Dame. We were in transition moving and most all of my perfume bottles and samples are boxed up except for Duality. I received a mini spray as well during the July 4 giveaway, I selected New Musk cologne for my brother-in-law. It smells amazing! I received a complimentary sample of New Musk Oil. Jeffrey Dame is such a talented perfumer and he is extremely generous with samples.
As of midnight last night, Colorado has mandated masks. I’m so glad!

    • Thanks! Yes, the beach was heavenly. So thankful we live within a few hours’ drive of the ocean! My husband was a naval officer and he loves the sea so much. We’d love to move closer when we both retire but that’s not any time soon. I hope you get your beach trip!

  3. WOW OH! Five years is a real milestone. Congratulations.
Australia is entering its second C19 wave currently. Yesterday was the second highest reported positive infection number since it all started, at 438. Almost all of those were in our neighbour state Victoria. The government is seriously talking about locking us all down again. Aussies as a whole have been very mask resistant, me included, but that may change if this keeps up.
Your holiday sounds like a real slice of heaven. So glad you got to get away and have some peace. I did try the Beach Hut pair and liked them but didn’t purchase at the time. Thanks for the reminder, I’ll go back and resniff.
My wearing has been pretty eclectic as usual. Today I’m in I by Costume National, it has a lovely fizzy opening that I’ve not noticed before. Then it calms down to a woodsy amber. Very wearable and pretty. Yesterday I was in Pour un Homme de Caron, all the lavender lollies. MMM MMMM!

    • Those both sound great! Stay safe and well. Re masks: if everyone wearing one will help get things stabilized, I’m in favor. I have some that look quite nice! Maybe you can have some made in super Portia Turbo fabrics! But seriously, I hope you and Jin stay well. You certainly smell great!

      • We have a bunch of masks here. Jin bought them so we had some for our Thailand holiday in Feb. He wore one on the way back because he had a scratchy throat but I didn’t. Yes, you’re right. If wearing them will stabilise the world then it’s churlish not to.

  4. Congratulations on your (almost) milestone! 🙂

I hate musks. I mean, as an experience. I’m not sure whether they actually work (seeing what people are doing with them). But the moment it became a law in our state, I haven’t had a second thought: if I want/need to get into a public place, I should wear a mask. Especially since masks protect others from me rather than me from others. My take on it: people may risk their lives if they chose to, but nobody should risk somebody else’s lives.
