Perfume Chat Room, January 13

The Perfume Chat Room is back! After a brief hiatus for December’s Scented Advent, then my new collaboration with Portia of Australian Perfume Junkies, “Notes on Notes” (first Mondays of the month), I’m ready to chat again and I hope you are too.

So, if you’re new to this blog, welcome to the Friday Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, January 13 (yes, it’s Friday the 13th), and here in the USA we are looking forward to our three-day weekend in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. This year, the holiday falls on Monday, January 16. I don’t have any special plans other than perhaps a lunch with the other volunteers who take part in a prize program to recognize high school students who make positive contributions to race relations in their schools or communities. I helped launch this program many years ago, and it is now nationwide. We’ve met so many wonderful teenagers who are doing great work. I love it.

Heads up — I spent last weekend visiting one of my closest friends in West Palm Beach, and I was able to go to the Guerlain boutique in The Breakers hotel in Palm Beach. Yes, I came home with a bottle (the “new” Mitsouko). Yes, that means I made it one whole week into 2023 before buying a new fragrance. Yes, I’ll do a separate post with photos!

Are you attempting a no-buy or low-buy for 2023? I am going to try a “low-buy” but I’m not exactly off to a good start, lol. Or do you have any particular fragrances on your 2023 wishlist?

  1. Can’t wait to hear what you think of the new Mitsouko! I want to try it also. The original one was always a bit of a conundrum for me. I definitely recognized its brilliance but I didn’t love the way it smelled on my skin.
I want to try the new Guerlain Arts and Matieres scent, Jasmin Bonheur. There was an article about it on Fragrantica yesterday. I should hopefully be getting a sample soon.

I’ve had 2 purchases recently. I bought Premiere Note Rose Sherezade for my Christmas present. After the Zoologist Hummingbird turned out to be a scary bird on my skin, it got sold on eBay, so I bought Rose Sherezade to replace it. It’s a warm, soft rose with citrus, jasmine, tonka and musk. It has good sillage and longevity. For my birthday on Three Kings Day I bought The Scent of Paradise by Alghabra. I’ve been wanting this one for a long time and thankfully it did not disappoint. It has notes of iris, rose, lavender, bergamot, sandalwood and amber. I smell spices in the mix, too, possibly saffron. It’s delightful, also with excellent sillage and longevity. So I won’t need anything else for quite a while.

Glad you got to visit Palm Beach. I love the Breakers and their Guerlain boutique is lovely. Did you go to Cafe Boulud while you were in town? The chef there is quite good, I think. I love the Breakers’ restaurants also since they have lots of gluten free options for me.

  2. Happy New Year, or newish at this stage. Ha, your low buy is similar to my own – I have a bottle of Shalimar Millésime Tonka on its way. Mitsouko is a no-go for me, for some strange reason it dumps me into a melancholic state. I cannot think of any other perfume that has ever done that to me. But that just means there’s more for everyone else. That’s a very worthwhile program you’re involved in, recognition is important.

  3. Oops, hit send again before I got to my sotd, Jorum Studio Gorseland, a very realistic rendering of this fabulous flower that doesn’t get much notice. It’s a very strong like.

  4. Ooh, more Guerlain! Enjoy the day off on Monday. Our son goes back to school on Sunday – no classes until Tuesday but some football weight room thing on Monday so he’ll have to forage for food for a day until dining opens again. I’m bringing back my Favorite Fridays for my Instagram perfume diary (last seen during my 365 perfumes project in 2021). I like having a project of sorts. Today I’m wearing Nicolaï Sacrebleu Intense. This perfume reminds me of a period during my youth when my mom had a container of stewed fruits on the counter (no idea why but they probably had alcohol so they were never served to us kids – ice cream topper, maybe?) The fruits in this scent remind me of that. Fragrantica lists it as “warm spicy” which is my favorite generic category. Happy Friday to all!

  5. I’ll see your Mitzi & raise you Hera.
YES I did it! I bought a FB of the magical potion from Liz Moores. My very own 50ml extrait bottle. Ordered late Wednesday & arrived today. She was packed with a handful of dried red rosebuds in the cardboard shredding. I’ve collected them all & popped the in one of my small lacquered papier mache boxes, they smell so hauntingly of summer & such a delightful personal touch.

Well done you on spearheading that fabulous award! A wonderful legacy to leave.
    Enjoy your long weekend
