Perfume Chat Room, July 21

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, July 21, and it is HOT! We did get some rain last night for the first time in several days, which will help my garden survive the next heat wave. I’ve been watering daily like a fanatic, but so far, everything is doing well, including the tomatoes that I swear every year I won’t plant again, and then I do.

Update on the Lucy saga: we seem to have conquered the pee smell, yay! And she hasn’t repeated her accidents, so we think some of the calming resources we’re using for her during thundery weather may be helping. Who’s a good girl?

If you haven’t yet read Portia’s and my latest “Counterpoint“, check it out! We’re having a lot of fun with these monthly collaborations (the other being “Notes on Notes“).

Are you sweltering in hot weather? How do you cool off? I am mostly staying inside, also due to poor air quality from the Canadian forest fires (!), venturing outside in the morning to do garden tasks, then retreating inside either at my office or house. I’ll go outside again around 6, when things start to cool down a bit, mostly to check on plants.

Happy weekend, everyone!

  1. Glad Lucy is doing better. Storms and fireworks are so triggering for many dogs and cats. It’s been very hot here in Florida, hot politically and temperature wise. We’re using fans to keep from having to turn the AC down any lower and use more electricity. We only go out early in the morning or after the sun goes down, unless there is a very urgent errand that has to be done later. We’ve totally sworn off using the oven. Fans and hydration are the keys to surviving the heat here. Lots of cool florals and citruses being sprayed.

  2. Excellent news that Lucy is less distressed.
The UK is sitting above the European heat dome, thankfully. In northern England it has rained most days but it isn’t cold, just warm enough.
When it is too hot & humid I stay inside as much as possible with fans going. Fortunately, we have solar panels so the electricity come from them during daylight. I try to avoid hot food too

    • Very wise! I envy you your solar panels — I looked into those and was told our roof and its orientation weren’t appropriate for them. I try to compensate a bit by driving a small electric car. Hoping for a solar-powered home charger for that!

      • We got a free charge point with the panels.
Back in the day there were incentives to get panels fitted & then generate sufficient power to feed into the National Grid. Of course it was dependant on the orientation of the roof. The energy company we’re signed up with pays us for what the panels generate. That paid for the cost of the panels & fitting in less than five years!
        Sadly, the scheme got discontinued.

  3. I conquer the heat by working inside! I have so many house projects to do, decluttering and reorganizing to make room to empty my kitchen for demo (not sure when we’ll start yet, should have some clarification next week. Hoping we can do most of the project while my son is away!). Today I’m wearing Nicolaï L’Eau Mixte. Citrus, mint cologne that goes chypre at the end, perfect. Glad the pup is doing better!

    • Yay for a redone kitchen! I’m decluttering too, gearing up for The Big Declutter later this summer and fall. The wind was so strong here last night, and our neighbors’ big trees swaying so much, that I moved several boxes of fragrances away from the back of our house (where a giant oak fell in 1995!). So now I have to organize them in a new space, lol.

  4. I have a fan for the bedroom if it gets too hot, otherwise just stay inside and hydrate. Thankfully it cooled down a bit, so at 26C it’s perfect weather. Eau de Rochas is great for hot days

  5. Hope your heat dials it down a couple of notches OH.
When we were kids we grew tomatoes and had excellent success with them. I’ve tried it a couple of times as an adult with lacklustre results. Good luck keeping your garden in tip top condition through the summer.
Sydney winter is beautiful weather. We usually sit 4-20C (40-70f) and the skies are the most gorgeous blue tending jacaranda. We have the odd thunder storm but they rarely go long and a full rainy day is a rarity.
Still going gangbusters with my sample/decant use year. Past the halfway now.

  6. I hope Lucy stays calm(er) going forward. Today my vSO killed a mosquito with a magazine, which provided a loud bang. Two ours later, Rusty still looks a little spooked 😉

It hasn’t been too hot in here yet: we had just a couple of days when we needed to turn on our A/C. But our hottest months are ahead – August and September. We’ll see how it goes.
