Perfume Chat Room, November 3

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, November 3, and I’m on my way to New England for a family christening! Our niece had her first baby this year, the first grandchild of this generation. The baby is my older sister’s first grandchild. I made her a bonnet from silk and lace from my sister’s wedding dress; I’m quite pleased with how it turned out, given that it’s my first real sewing project in many years.

I’m excited — I took part this week in a NST splitmeet for the first time! I’ve received my 5 ml of Jacques Fath’s L’Iris de Fath eau de parfum from the NST splitmeet; haven’t worn it yet because I’ve been so busy this week and want to give it my full attention. Some of you may remember how I swooned when I got to sample the extrait de parfum when it was first released, at the boutique Jovoy Paris, in London. I am so, so tempted to buy the eau de parfum but I’m trying to behave myself and not rush into an expensive blind buy. Splitmeet to the rescue!

  2. Beautiful bonnet! And enjoy your split. I have my first Friday night off since late August; my HS team has a playoff game next week but nothing this week. Im wearing a favorite – Nicolaï Sacrebleu Intense – and sitting at the hair salon to get spruced up! Off to Cleveland tomorrow, my son will hopefully get a few minutes of playing time…. Enjoy your trip and weekend!!

  3. Love the bonnet. I haven’t done any sewing in many years except for hemming some things. I’d have to buy a new sewing machine. Iris de Fath is definitely one I want to try.

  4. Aren’t you a wizz on the sewing machine. That will be a special family heirloom. Enjoy the celebrations, it’s lovely for family to come together for a happy event. Are you going to wear the L’Iris? I’d love to have a smidge of that. I’ll have to put feelers out.

    • Thanks! I won’t wear L’Iris this weekend, I left safely it at home. In fact, I completely forgot to bring any fragrance with me, so I’ll have to borrow from my other sister. I’m staying at her house.

    • No, that’s a different one (also lovely, I have Irissime too). Iris de Fath was an attempt to re-create Faith’s Iris Gris, whose formula is apparently under lock and key. There was a contest and a young, less known perfumer surprised everyone by winning. So a parfum was made, and this year they’ve issued the Eau de Parfum.

  7. What a beautiful bonnet! Sewing was one of the crafts I’ve never mastered, so it impresses me every time I see regular people (as in “not a professional seamstress”) making something beautiful.

    I would have missed the splitmeet if it weren’t for your post – thank you! Now when I read all the offerings, I can knowingly skip it since nothing is tempting enough to break my very-low-buy resolution. It’s sad to see though how unpopular it became: I remember times when people were closing multiple bottles of the same perfume. And now I encountered one or two closed splits. I understand why it happens but still…
