Perfume Chat Room, January 18

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Saturday, January 18, and we are expecting snow again next week! I do not expect Lucy to be any more impressed with it than she was last week, lol. While she can in fact learn the occasional new trick, her opinions on the weather have hardened over time.

Lucy, not impressed by snow

I took advantage of yesterday’s and today’s mild weather to go out and spread more mulch on my plants as protection against the upcoming cold.

However, the Big News in our family is that my niece had her second baby last weekend! She’s just adorable, and I’m looking forward to seeing her and her sister soon.

My new great-niece!

Sadly, last week also brought the funeral of a beloved minister, the former Rector of our church. We couldn’t be too sad, though, as he was almost 90 and had lost his dear wife several years ago; he missed her very much. They had been sweethearts since toddlerhood. Also, he was one of the most joyful people I’ve ever met, and the service was filled with love and laughter. Even the Bishop told some funny stories! At the end of the church service, we all went outside to the tune of “When the Saints Go Marching In, one of the late Rector’s favorites, and the whole extended family was given Mardi Gras parasols of purple, green, and gold to wave over their heads. What a send-off it was!

Usually I don’t wear a favorite scent to funerals, as I don’t want to associate sadness with a special fragrance, but this time I wore L’Heure Bleue, the newish Les Legendaires version of the eau de toilette. I’m glad I did, both because the funeral was much more cheerful than I expected, and because it’s just such a lovely scent. I enjoyed it for several hours, and it really did develop over that time, from cool flowers and anise through spices and carnations to a warm, resinous vanilla. If you like Guerlain fragrances, I highly recommend trying the Legendaires line, I think they’re very well done.

How was your week?

  1. A new baby is born, an old friend passes on. A significant week for you. We are still covered in snow, and the bitter cold is on its way -Tuesday’s low will be -3F. Brrrr. It will be cold on Monday as well and I have a morning photography gig at the township’s MLK day volunteer event. So far this winter it’s been girls basketball so doing a non-sports event will be a nice change of pace. Perfume wise – this weekend I’m thunking my last decant of L’Artisan Vanille Absolument (what was left when I dropped and broke the top off my bottle 😢). Sorry to see it go.

  2. Heya OH!

Love that your rector could have a wife and family. It seems so strange that our RCs cannot, and I’m sure it’s part of the problem.

Yay for your dog, smart puppy.

Hope your garden makes it through unscathed.

I’m trying very hard to keep my studies up. Some new nibbles at extra gigs which would be fantastic. Fingers crossed.

  3. In some churches funerals are known as ‘homegoings.’ I love that! A family friend passed away last year and her funeral was a true celebration of her life and of her ‘homegoing.’ It was a joyous event, in spite of the sadness everyone felt in missing her.

We had a retired rector similar to your friend in our Episcopal congregation in Miami. Father Bolle was the loveliest human I have ever met. In his 80’s always smiling, always happy, despite many health challenges. When he was a toddler, my son thought Father Bolle was God. Little kids are so cute. 🙂

Wearing warm cozy perfumes in the chilly weather, Dusita Montri and Pelagos. North Florida may get some snow Wednesday!

  4. It’s been a trying couple of weeks, DH’s treatment was delayed a further week. This time his kidney function was too low. I’d noticed he’d been saying no to coffee in the afternoon, but hadn’t realised he wasn’t drinking at all. Turns out he’d decided ge didn’t want to get up in the night cos he was fatigued. He thought not drinking in after 3pm would do the trick. The man shouldn’t be allowed to think! He was a dual qualified nurse yet still didn’t apply his learning to himself!!! I shall mollycoddle him despite his specialist nurse & doctors telling me not to.
Perfume wise? I’ve been wearing the 4160Tuesdays JJB. So far numbers 2, 7 & 9 are just nice. The rest aren’t for me.

    • I’m sorry to hear that! My late mother in law would do something similar, though she was trying to spare my father in law the job of helping her in the middle of the night. I think you should mollycoddle as much as you like. My own DH is en route to Barcelona again for work and I miss him though he just left for the airport!

Tell us more about the JJB fragrances you do like, when you get a chance.

    • Well if he can’t have a bit of mollycoddling at this time, then he’ll never have it😉 But yeah, men. I’ve been my hubby’s Nurse Ratched on the couple of occasions when he tried to die on me. They’re tricky sometimes 😃

  5. New baby in the extended family is a great counterbalance to the loss of someone you knew, which is always hard, no matter how we rationalize the event.

My week was mercifully uneventful. I had some rather positive “half-news” at work, but since nothing has been announced officially yet, I’m waiting to see if this actually happens and hoping it’ll be as positive as I hope.

Three-day weekend is always appreciated (by those of us who’s still not retired 😉 ), so I’m enjoying my Monday morning in bed. But need to get up and do something useful. Perfume-wise, I was almost good and wore something 5 of 7 days last week. Unexpectedly, I recently discovered that liked Delina Exclusive (Parfums de Marley), so now I’m sneaking a wear whenever I come across it in one of the department stores. It’s so expensive that I want to be absolutely sure I like it before I start my search for a decant (or maybe even try to get a travel spray).

  6. It’s lovely to have a joyful send off for someone who’s had a life well lived. The natural order of things. Congratulations to your niece, a happy event. Just heard news this evening that my cousin’s son and his wife became parents to twins, one of each, instant family🥰 and someone to carry on the family name.
