Perfume Chat Room, October 3

Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, October 3, and I’ve been reading a lot about a recent report on COVID-related loss of sense of smell (hyposmia): Loss of smell may linger years after COVID-19. Interestingly, the study also showed some loss of smell among people who hadn’t noticed it after an infection.

Did you lose any of your sense of smell after a bout of COVID? Is it back to normal? I’ve read about people retraining their noses, using some of the methods I think perfumers use to improve their sense of smell. I feel thankful that I haven’t experienced hyposmia, which can have quite a negative impact on wellbeing.

On a more cheerful note (pun intended), have you changed your regular scent rotation to welcome fall?

  1. two rounds of covid, lost my smell for a day or two the second time. No long term issues. It’s still hitting the high 70s here so I haven’t fully rotated in my fall perfumes. Hoping to get there soon; my favorite weather is “football weather”!

  2. Thank goodness I’ve never had Covid. Just got my shot for the fall season 10 days ago. I have definitely gotten out the fall fragrances even though it’s still pretty hot here. The humidity level has gone down some, so that signals fall in Florida. The fall irises are being worn now–Neela Vermeire’s Niral, Christian Provenzano Iris de Orient, and Dominique Ropion’s Velvet Iris for Essential Perfumes. My 2 favorite coffee fragrances are out for wear this weekend, too– Tomavicci Xanat and Dusita Tonka Latte I’m not a big gourmand lover, but these two are well done and have lots of layers and good development. Ambers will be next.

    • Wow, you smell great! I’m glad you haven’t had COVID. I’ve had it twice but didn’t lose my sense of smell. I’m planning to get my shots, including flu, in the next couple of weeks. I have to time it around my fitness class schedule at the Y, lol.

  3. Hi there OH!
C19 didn’t affect my sense of smell at all, fortunately. My apparatus has always been fairly blunt anyway so maybe I didn’t even notice.

We are heading into summer pretty quickly here in Sydney and having returned from travels I will now spend a couple of hours reorganizing my grab tray for warmer weather.

    Portia xx
