Thunking Thursday: Gabrielle

I’ve realized I have two completely opposite ways that I thunk samples. One, I happily thunk a sample because I liked it so much that a full bottle has entered my house, either for me or a loved one. That is how I thunked Vitriol d’Oeillet, because I had bought a full bottle for my husband. It smells super on him, and I can get another sniff any time. I also thunked a sample of Tiffany & Co. Intense, because I knew I would be getting a full bottle for Christmas.

Two, I’ll cheerfully thunk a sample when I know I probably won’t hanker for it in the future, but I don’t hate it so much that I can’t finish the sample. Gabrielle, the new pillar fragrance from Chanel, falls into that category for me. It is a pretty fragrance, and I’ll even say it is better than most of the fruity-florals aimed at younger women, but to me it suffers by comparison with the much more interesting Chanel No. 5 L’Eau. So today is the day I will thunk my sample of Gabrielle, with some affection but no regret.

How do you think about thunking? Any thunks this week?

  1. I blind bought Gabrielle when released because I knew I’d like it, because Chanel. I don’t wear it often, but look forward to re-visiting it this spring/summer.
If I purchase a bottle and still have a sample, I usually gift it to my fragrance friend. If I find the sample just ok, I usually wear it until thunk, or empty it on a scarf or clothing in my closet if it’s not for my skin to wear. If it’s an absolute no, I save in a bag until I have enough and bring to my gym to leave on the counter in the women’s locker room for others to try (I also do this with samples of products or makeup from my monthly beauty boxes that I won’t use). Hoping that someone will use and enjoy!

  2. I don’t thunk that many samples because I save them to pass along to others more often than not. Sometimes it takes one wearing of a sample to trigger the full bottle buy – this just happened with DSH/American Perfumer Colorado. One spray of the sample was all it took. I will be sharing the sample (any CONUS takers here – let me know!).

  3. I don’t think at all…I just thunk. This week Pink Haze and Woodcut that I won from Australian Perfume Junkies and the son and I thunked a Job Malone Red Roses soap.
I also do ask friends before I thunk if they want to try it. If yes, I store it in the basement until they get mailed. I guess those are kinda thunks because they leave my house.

  4. Since I do not wear perfumes from samples (unless I’m in the final phase of confirming that I want a bottle or bought a bottle already and use the sample for traveling or refreshing during the day), I rarely finish any. I used to keep them “for reference” but About a year ago I decided that I shouldn’t hoard samples – at least not those that I didn’t like, so now i’m trying to pass them on once I finish testing.
