Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.
Today is Friday, January 12, and baby, it’s cold outside! Update: it is now Saturday, January 13 — my posting got delayed! I’ve been running around my garden adding mulch like mad and planning which potted plants we can move into our screened porch before temperatures dip below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Last Christmas, we had a similar hard freeze, and I lost a number of plants. So I’m determined to do better protecting them this year!
I feel as if I’m betwixt and between, scentwise. Christmas is definitely over, so the warm, spicy scents that I enjoy during the holiday don’t really fit right now; and we are still quite far from spring, so I haven’t brought out greens and florals yet. I know it’s not mandatory to match one’s fragrance to the season, but the seasons do affect what appeals to me. And right now, I’m having trouble deciding! What are your fragrance choices for a chilly January?

I tend to wear a lot of ambers in the winter. The greens don’t seem right. However, today I’m wearing my mini of Mon Guerlain as part of my project. I’m torn – do I keep my mini bottles because they are cute, or do I let them go when I’m not that keen on the fragrance? I’m not that much of a collector but what little impulse I have enjoys the little bottles…. It’s cold here, too, really feels like the first burst of winter. Son goes back to school tomorrow so the vibe here will definitely change. Kitchen is fully demo’d now, hopefully the progress continues on that front!

Wow, that is progress! I agree, the minis are so cute. How are you liking Mon Guerlain??

Welcome to 2024 OH! Hope it treats us all kindly.
I mainly go two ways in the cold. Either warm and fuzzy ambers, woods, powders, vanillas or fresh, icy, summer coolers.
Also, I’ve been known to hit a luscious spring floral or tropical solar to remember the warmth.
Good luck with the plants.

Thanks! You and MMK are reminding me that I do like L’Ambre des Merveilles in these chilly months. Will pull mine out tomorrow!

Ambers, especially during hard frosts & snow. I do keep vintage Opium & various Shalimars on stand by too.
Crisp, cold sunshine often makes me crave vitamin C, so fruities & citruses with or without white flowers hit that spot.

How about caramel? Prada Candy doesn’t mind the current -8C weather out this way.

Definitely! Caramels and vanillas are great in chilly weather. I’ve been wearing Xerjoff’s Lira frequently recently.

I’m also wearing a lot of ambers, spicy fragrances and woody vanillas. I like fragrances that feel cozy, like a warm blanket, in colder months.

i like the spicier chypres in the cold, Paradoxe, Niki de St Phalle etc or something with a not too sweet vanilla note or an amber note. Plus some incense perfumes.
