Perfume Chat Room, November 1

Rabbit rabbit! Welcome to the weekly Perfume Chat Room, perfumistas! I envision this chat room as a weekly drop-in spot online, where readers may ask questions, suggest fragrances, tell others their SOTD, comment on new releases or old favorites, and respond to each other. The perennial theme is fragrance, but we can interpret that broadly. This is meant to be a kind space, so please try not to give or take offense, and let’s all agree to disagree when opinions differ. In fragrance as in life, your mileage may vary! YMMV.

Today is Friday, November 1, All Saints Day, and we’re still having the kind of weather I associate with what used to be called “ Indian summer” in New England. Cool nights, warm sunny days, clear skies with little humidity. My roses are blossoming again for the fall, with the cooling temperatures, and they’re so pretty (fragrant, too). To coordinate, I’ve been wearing some autumnal rose scents, including Mizensir’s Rose Exaltante and some Aerin samples I got a while ago at Nordstrom’s.

Munstead Wood rose and friends

Last night was Halloween and we had quite a few cute goblins visit. My favorites are the toddlers who have to be coached on how to say “trick or treat”. Our neighborhood goes all out for Halloween; we block off a couple of streets to cars, and it’s a very safe locale, so families from other parts of the city often come to walk around and ring doorbells.

We’ll be setting our clocks back an hour in the US tomorrow night, which is always a bit of a jolt. Now that Halloween is over, everything everywhere all at once seems to be covered in Christmas decor. Are we skipping Thanksgiving? We’ve now officially begun the annual forced march through the holidays, from Halloween to New Year’s Day. I do love the holiday season, but it’s a lot of work!

My husband and I are planning another trip in late February and we’re thinking about Munich and Salzburg. Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Happy November, everyone!

  1. Germany and Austria? Sounds fabulous. We had a good number of trick or treaters, we hung out with our neighbor in the driveway (we are on the high side of the street, the steps do deter some from coming to the door.). It was super warm – 80 degrees at 6 pm. Temps dropped overnight and it’s now mid 40s, more typical for November. I had a night off from HS football but off to Cleveland tomorrow morning for my son’s game. Today I’m wearing. DSH UPCYCL series, November Spice. Seemed an appropriate choice for the first day of the month. It’s a spicy amber, not too heavy.

  2. Halloween misses us out now. Most of the children know only to go to decorated houses or to the houses of their friends. I’m sure it’s that they are accompanied by nominated parents these days. When Halloween took off in the UK my boys were reaching an age where trick or treating was no longer cool. We still had a stash of goodies just in case but they weren’t needed.
It’s Bonfire Night in the UK on 5th Nov. Also called Guy Faulkes night. We burn effigies of Guy Faulkes on bonfires & hold firework parties. These are now largely held by local authorities or are community events due to health & safety. Still some households go mad with huge fireworks.
We won’t be attending. Mr Jarvis Cockapoo is terrified of the whizz bangs & spends the evening(s) shaking & drooling in terror.
I’ve pulled out the autumnal scents ready to spritz, Sentire x Sainte Cellier Smoked Plum Tea & Tobacco Sun, Les Abstraits Belle Ame, Lattafa Khamrah & SL Ecrin de Fumee join my autumn ambers. All are big hitters so a spray on the throat & one on the wrist is plenty! Scarf scents one & all

      • We have. We wrap him tightly in one of my longer scarves & cover his ears. A week or two before the event we put on a calming plugin. I even give him the occasional piriton tablet. These take the edge off but he is still terrified. We spent last night on the floor behind the bedroom door, hiding.

        • Poor Mr. Jarvis. This is so sad, the sweet little lad. He’s lucky he has such a loving mom. My dogs were anxious about a lot of things but fireworks never scared them. If they heard something loud they would just bark loudly at it and then strut around proudly like they had beaten that loud noise with their barks. I think fireworks for personal use should be illegal anyway. They’re frightening to so many people and animals and they’re dangerous, too.

  3. We had Halloween with the grandkids and I think I’ll be skipping that next year. The sugar crazies are real. Eek! Luckily, the candy disappeared the next day 😁 The Diwali 🪔 celebration the next evening was much more enjoyable. I wore Parfums de Nicolai’s St. Honore’ and I’m liking it more and more, a nutty, warm scent without any real obvious sweetness.

  4. This year, we were supposed to go to our friends’ house for Halloween, but it was cancelled the last moment because of the family member’s flu. So since we didn’t prepare anything for trick-or-treaters, we just went for a 90-minutes walk in the neighborhood taking photos of rare decorated houses: we have designated Halloween streets (too far for us to walk there, and we didn’t want to look for a parking), so the rest of the city has sporadically decorations, which we tried to find randomly turning to different streets.
It’s a beautiful rose! It’s so surprising to see it blooming in November.
